Potensic A20 Mini
Price: $29.99
  • Fly time: 8.5 min (6-8 minutes during our tests)
  • Camera: No
  • Propeller Guards: Yes

A fantastic choice for your youngest kids (aged six and up) aspiring to fly a drone. It's quite similar to HASAKEE Q9. The main difference is that it's cheaper and doesn’t have self-stabilization, requiring constant adjustment during flight to prevent it from drifting.
However, it comes with three batteries, boosting the effective fly time to 15-18 minutes which makes it quite attractive. It’s still a drone with beginners in mind, ensuring a safe and enjoyable flight experience.

The drone also has some important features, boasting altitude hold, one-key takeoff and landing, and even a headless mode to simplify control. Its compact design ensures safe indoor flying but it’s not recommended to fly outdoors as it’s sensitive to wind and will easily drift away.

  • Beginner-friendly controls
  • Altitude hold for stable flights

  • Colorful LED lights for added fun

Cons ❌

  • Limited flight time (around 6-8 minutes)
  • Basic camera quality

For a budget-friendly price of $29.99, the POTENSIC A20 Mini is a great toy drone that lets you fly for 15-18 minutes before charging all the batteries. The lack of stability makes it a little harder to fly, but with the three batteries, you get to fly more which is a reasonable tradeoff.

Buyers Guide for Toy Drones

1. Smaller drones are safer for kids.

Opt for a compact, lightweight drone that's easy for kids to handle. Look for durable construction to withstand any accidental landings. The thing about small drones is that they have less mass which means less energy in a crash. Most toy drones won’t even knock a coffee cup off a table.

2. Simplified controls are a must.

Features that make a drone easy to control are auto takeoff, return, altitude hold, and return. These features help the pilot do one or all of these things with a press of a button. In the beginning, these features remove frustration and create a positive experience until we get enough experience.

3. Camera, do you need it?

Some models offer built-in cameras for recording video and taking photos, and some only have a camera for displaying the drone's perspective. While a camera isn’t necessary to have fun, it can motivate your kid to keep flying and learn to become a skilled pilot as a video or photo is something they can share with friends.

4. Battery and flight time.

Toy drones can rarely fly for more than 7-10 minutes per charge. Less than 5 minutes and it might get frustrating as it can take a while to get the hang of flying. In order to not have to wait 60 minutes for the battery to charge, consider getting additional batteries instead of a drone with a longer flight time.

5. Propeller guards.

Even though the motors on toy drones aren’t that powerful, the propellers can still hurt and cause pain. Make sure you get a drone with propeller guards.

Conclusion

There you have it, fellow adventurers and parents! We've taken a thrilling journey through the world of kid-friendly drones. I'm confident you're now equipped with all the essential knowledge to choose the perfect flying companion for your little ones. From safety features to flight time, we've covered it all.

So go ahead, take flight with your young aviators, and watch as their imaginations take off. The sky's the limit, and with the right drone, the adventure never ends. Happy flying, young pilots!
